Lavance Gay, Assistant Superintendent for Pierce County, was the guest speaker at Exchange Club. He stated his main responsibilities are Finance and Transportation, so he has a big role in maintaining and improving the buildings and facilities. He detailed improvements made over the last year and financed mainly by the SPLOST sales tax program including: Updating the HVAC, and Lighting at Blackshear Elementary and Pierce Middle. Renovating the track and adding an addition to the gymnasium to add restroom’s for outside events and to add an exercise room with weights. The High School has an upgraded gymnasium and the field house was gutted and remodeled to expand the locker rooms and renovate the weight room, wash rooms and also received an updated HVAC system. They currently have plans to add more tennis courts at the High school, repair drainage issues in the parking areas and have set aside approximately 2.4 million to totally renovate Patterson Elementary. Lavance noted that our School System is one of the major engines that drive our economy and believes with everyone working together including teachers, coaches and parents; we will continue to be one of the top school systems.
